How to Store Firewood This Winter

Storing firewood might seem like a straightforward task, but it has several conditions for proper storing. Improperly stored firewood could not only ruin the wood that you have carefully selected but may also be a safety risk to your home and family. We have created a helpful list ofthe best ways to store your Premium Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs from Mainland Aggregates to ensure safe storage and an efficient burn.

1. Location

Dried hardwood logs should be stored between 5ft and 30ft away from your house, never inside. This reduces the risk of fire hazards and stops pests from invading your home. Only bring in enough logs for 1 or 2 days at a time.

2. Elevation

Premium Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs from Mainland Aggregates are dried to less than 20% moisture content, but that does not mean they cannot absorb moisture if they are exposed. Keep the firewood off the ground will pallets or a firewood rack to keep the logs dry. The elevation will also ensure that the air circulation will keep the firewood well-seasoned.

3. Coverings

Keeping the rain and snow off the firewood keeps the firewood dry of course but also stops the development of mould. However, do not fully cover the firewood but leave the sides exposed to allow air ventilation to stop the build-up of moisture.

4. Stack Wisely

The best way to stack the logs is in a criss-cross pattern, this provides not only a stable structure with good air circulation. Try and keep your firewood logs no higher than 4ft as any higher increases the likelihood of the firewood toppling over.

5. Insect Inspection

Before bringing any of the kiln dried hardwood logs inside, check for signs of insects. Pests like termites, beetles, or spiders might have made the wood their home. Only bring inside the amount of wood you'll use shortly to prevent any unnoticed pests from setting up shop in your home.

6. Regularly Rotate and Check Your Stock

Using the oldest logs first ensures that the logs are used before they become damp or develop mould. Inspect your logs regularly for the development of damp, decay, or mould to rectify any problems that may ruin your store of firewood.
